Honestly, I didn’t have a photo to go with this so here’s Wendy Williams being Wendy Williams. I think it fits… Maybe?

Anyways, as I’m writing this I’m currently in the final weeks of my last semester. Graduation is so close I can taste it, but so far I can’t enjoy it yet. However, when this is posted, I will have graduated and I’ll probably be fun-employed (lol sucks for you future Kim). As I sit here and think back on my college career, instead of actually doing my homework or studying for the test I have on Saturday, I thought I’d write a post about not letting others shit on your dreams and dealing with that criticism. So let’s have a chat, shall we?

The reason why this crossed my mind is because I’m an advertising/public relations major who did really well in school, but is currently feeling the “holy shit I need a job” and “what am I doing with the rest of my life?” feelings pretty hard. I know deep down it’s all going to be fine and I’ll find something, but the thought still makes me freak out at least once a day. As I panic (at the disco) and cry softly about my future, I am reminded of the time I went to church with my mother and was told by a fellow parish member that I’m basically not going to go anywhere with my major… And that I should switch to math or science because (apparently) those are the only majors that succeed in the world (HINT: THEY’RE NOT). I was either in my first or second year of college when this happened and it felt so shitty to hear. I was not going to change my major to accommodate his extremely rude and outdated point of view, but it was still a very awkward situation. Check out the video below to hear more details about it all went down.

But seriously, don’t shit on people’s dreams like that and don’t let others shit on your dreams either! If people want to do something that makes them happy without hurting themselves and others, then who are we to deny them of that happiness? And in the same right, if someone tells you that your career dreams are shit or criticizes you for what you want to do with your life, let them. But do not let it turn you away from doing what you want with your life.

Everyone is going to have their opinions and it’s our job not to mold to everything everyone says. I know that it’s hard to not let that get to you, but life is long and it’s also really short. Not to sound like a cliché, stale meme (or Drake), but you really do only live once. So to waste your entire life on a career that makes you unhappy and miserable is a bit shit, isn’t it? Even if that career makes you a bunch of money, is it really worth the misery? I know money aids in happiness by making you able to buy things that make you happy, but it’s not the money that directly makes you happy, it’s what you do with it. Anyway, that’s the besides the point, this is not about money. The point is, do something with your life that makes you happy because life’s too short to be miserable doing a job you hate for an extended period of time.

And before you all have a fit, I know it’s not possible for everyone to follow their dreams. Some people can’t do it because of financial reasons, people holding them back, etc. And I completely understand that, but if you can, then please do.

In summary, do what makes you happy, don’t hurt others in the process, and don’t be a dick :).

Leave a comment and let me know what your dreams are or if you’ve had a similar experience with people not being very #supportive of your dreams. Let me know, I’m here for you.
